How did Homo Heuristicus Become Ecologically Rational?

چکیده
Gigerenzer and colleagues have proposed the ‘adaptive toolbox of heuristics’ as an account of resource-bounded human decision-making. According to these authors, evolution has endowed such toolboxes with ‘ecological rationality’, defined as the ability to make good quality decisions in their specific environments. Here we explore to what extent the mechanisms of evolution alone are sufficient to explain the emergence of ecologically rational toolboxes. It is not clear how evolution can lead to ecologically rational toolboxes within the space of possible toolboxes. That is, even if one assumes a very simple environment (e.g., 10 cues and 50 decisions), the number of possible toolboxes (107̂2) is still astronomical. By using artificial evolution simulations we investigated the evolvability of ecologically rational toolboxes. We present preliminary results showing that evolution can produce toolboxes of heuristics that are “good enough” to survive, but those toolboxes are not ecologically rational.

Homo Heuristicus: Less-is-More Effects in Adaptive Cognition.
Heuristics are efficient cognitive processes that ignore information. In contrast to the widely held view that less processing reduces accuracy, the study of heuristics shows that less information, computation, and time can in fact improve accuracy. We discuss some of the major progress made so far, focusing on the discovery of less-is-more effects and the study of the ecological rationality of...

Heuristics are efficient cognitive processes that ignore information. In contrast to the widely held view that less processing reduces accuracy, the study of heuristics shows that less information, computation, and time can in fact improve accuracy. We review the major progress made so far: (a) the discovery of less-is-more effects; (b) the study of the ecological rationality of heuristics, whi...
متن کاملThe Virtues and Vices of Biased Rationality: An Eco-Cognitive Account
This paper aims at illustrating the virtues and vices of biased rationality. Starting with the virtues of biased rationality, we will illustrate the idea of Homo Heuristicus along with its fallacious dimension. We will claim that the rationale of biased rationality consists in turning ignorance into a cognitive virtue. More precisely, we will argue that biases provide us with premissory startin...
متن کاملTowards Competitive Instead of Biased Testing of Heuristics: A Reply to Hilbig and Richter (2011)
Our programmatic article on Homo heuristicus (Gigerenzer & Brighton, 2009) included a methodological section specifying three minimum criteria for testing heuristics: competitive tests, individual-level tests, and tests of adaptive selection of heuristics. Using Richter and Späth's (2006) study on the recognition heuristic, we illustrated how violations of these criteria can lead to unsupported...
متن کاملThe shortsighted brain: neuroeconomics and the governance of choice in time.
The young field of neuroeconomics converges around behavioral deviations from the model of the human being as Homo economicus, a rational actor who calculates his choices to maximize his individual satisfaction. In a historical moment characterized by economic, health, and environmental crises, policymakers have become increasingly concerned about a particular deviation for which neuroeconomics...
